Good to Know
Yard Work Rules in Upper Allen Township.
Local rules that come up with lawn, leaf, snow and patio work, with the source for each. Dates change year to year, so check the source before you plan around one.
Leaf collection
The township collects loose leaves at the curb from early October into mid-December, rotating by neighborhood. Piles with grass, sticks or other plant material mixed in aren't collected, and the schedule is weather dependent. A fall cleanup hauls them away instead.

Brush
The township picks up brush by zone in April and May (one pile per house, up to three feet high and ten feet wide, no contractor piles) and takes brush from residents at the township building on set dates in late summer and fall, limbs up to four inches across. For an overgrown corner or a pile bigger than that, brush removal takes it all away.

Sidewalks after a snow
Township code gives owners 24 hours after snow stops to clear the full width of the sidewalk, including across the driveway, and snow can't be pushed onto a street or right-of-way (Chapter 205). Plowing starts at three inches, and parking on township streets is banned in a snow emergency. Set up snow removal before the first storm.

Patios and walkways
A zoning permit is required for a new or expanded patio, slab or sidewalk, and for fences between two and six feet. Projects that add less than 2,000 square feet of hard surface are exempt from the stormwater controls; 2,000 to 7,500 square feet uses the township's small project review (§ 214-13). Ask the township before a patio, walkway or wall starts.

Grass height and trees
The township's property code caps weeds and plant growth at 10 inches within 200 feet of an occupied building, and asks that tree limbs stay above 7 feet over sidewalks and 14 feet over roads (Chapter 189). A regular mowing schedule and a yearly shrub trimming cover both.

Burning and lawn equipment hours
Any burning needs a permit from the township code official, leaves can't be burned, and recreational fires stay 25 feet from structures. Power tools and lawn equipment are allowed between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. (§ 181-2.7), which is when we work anyway.
