Good to Know
Yard Work Rules in Carlisle.
Local rules that come up with lawn, leaf, snow and patio work, with the source for each. Dates change year to year, so check the source before you plan around one.
Fall leaf collection
The borough collects loose leaves and leaves in biodegradable paper bags from mid-October into early December. Put them about a foot from the curb, leaves only, at least five feet from parked cars and storm drains, and no more than 24 hours before your collection day. A fall cleanup hauls them away instead.

Fall brush collection
Brush pickup is a separate week in the fall: bundles tied with string, 40 inches long or less, and nothing 6 inches or more across. Bigger piles and overgrown corners are a job for brush removal.

Sidewalks after a snow
Borough code gives owners 24 hours after snow stops to clear the sidewalk, and the snow can't go back into the street (§ 223-16). Set up snow removal for the driveway before the first storm.

Patios and retaining walls
In the borough, an uncovered patio needs a zoning permit, and a retaining wall over 4 feet needs both a building and a zoning permit. Check with the borough's Codes Office before a patio or wall project starts.

Street trees
Trees in or over the street are under the borough's Shade Tree Commission, and planting, trimming or removing one takes a permit first (§ 239-7).

Grass height
Borough code treats grass or weeds over six inches as a nuisance (§ 160-4B). A weekly or biweekly mowing schedule is the easy way to stay under it.
