Lawn Care & Landscaping in Silver Spring Township
Silver Spring runs from the Mechanicsburg line out past New Kingstown to Blue Mountain, so it has a bit of everything: newer subdivisions off the Carlisle Pike, older homes in Hogestown and New Kingstown, and bigger properties toward Wertzville and the mountain. Big lawns and long bed lines are normal here.

Good to Know
Yard Work Rules in Silver Spring Township.
Local rules that come up with lawn, leaf, snow and patio work, with the source for each. Dates change year to year, so check the source before you plan around one.
Leaf collection
The township vacuums leaves on township-owned roads from late October, skipping Thanksgiving week. Piles go at the edge of the road, no more than two feet wide and two feet high, within reach of the six-foot hose, with no sticks or trash mixed in and nothing under a tarp. Bagged leaves go to the compost site instead. A fall cleanup hauls them away.

Yard waste and compost
The hauler picks up yard waste three times a year, one week each in April, May and October. Residents can also use the joint compost facility shared with Mechanicsburg for leaves and brush under 14 inches across, with a $30 card. Grass clippings, sod and stumps aren't accepted, and it's closed to landscapers, so what we cut leaves with us.

Sidewalks after a snow
Township code gives owners 24 hours after snow, ice or slush stops to clear a path at least 36 inches wide, and no snow may be placed on a public road, including from a driveway or parking lot (Chapter 356). Set up snow removal before the first storm.

Patios and retaining walls
The township's permit guide is clear: a paver patio, a driveway extension or a retaining wall under four feet needs a zoning permit, and a retaining wall over four feet needs a building permit. Setbacks apply to patios whether covered or not. Stormwater review starts at 1,000 square feet of cumulative new hard surface. Ask the township before a patio or wall project starts.

Grass height
Grass and vegetation over 12 inches from grade is a violation under township code, with exceptions for farmland, wetlands, basins and wooded areas (§ 408-5). A regular mowing schedule keeps a lawn far under it.

Trees and burning
Owners keep branches at least 20 feet over the road and 8 feet over the sidewalk (Chapter 377). Burning leaf waste and yard waste is banned in the township (§ 136-3), so leaves and brush have to be collected or hauled.
