Core Aeration & Lawn Renovation in Mechanicsburg and Cumberland County

Lawns that get mowed, walked on and played on every week pack the soil down. Water runs off instead of soaking in, roots stay shallow, and the grass thins out no matter how often it's fed. Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn so air, water and fertilizer can reach the roots again.

We aerate lawns for homes and businesses across Cumberland County and the Harrisburg area, and pair it with overseeding when the lawn is thin.

Some lawns are too far gone for that: mostly weeds, bare soil or dead grass. A renovation starts those areas over. The old growth is cleared out, the soil is loosened and prepared, and new seed goes down in the right window, planned around fertilization and weed control so nothing works against the new grass.

The Service

What aeration and renovation include

  • A look at the lawn and soil to decide between aeration, overseeding or a renovation
  • Core aeration that pulls plugs of soil instead of spiking it down
  • Overseeding right after aeration, while the holes give seed good soil contact
  • Renovation for lawns that are mostly weeds or bare: clearing, soil prep and new seed
  • Coordination with fertilization and weed control so they don't work against new seed
  • Watering and mowing guidance for the weeks after
  • Homes and commercial properties

Good to Know

When to aerate

Early fall, from late August into early October, is the best time to aerate cool-season lawns in central Pennsylvania. The grass is growing strongly and recovers quickly, and it's also the best window for overseeding, so the two go together.

Spring aeration works too, once the lawn is actively growing. Mid-summer is the time to skip: heat and dry weather already stress the grass, and it recovers slowly. Most lawns do well with aeration once a year or every other year; high-traffic lawns and heavy soils may need it more often.

Questions

What does core aeration do?

It pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, a few inches deep. That loosens compacted soil and opens a path for air, water and fertilizer to reach the roots, which helps the grass grow deeper roots.

When is the best time to aerate in central Pennsylvania?

Early fall, from late August into early October, when cool-season grass recovers fastest and seed can go down at the same time. Spring, once the lawn is growing, is the second-best window.

Should I overseed after aerating?

If the lawn is thin, yes. The holes give seed direct contact with the soil, which is what it needs to sprout. See lawn seeding and overseeding.

What should I do before you aerate?

Flag sprinkler heads, shallow irrigation lines and invisible pet fence wires so we can work around them. If it's been dry, water the lawn a day or two before so the tines can get into the soil.

What about the plugs left on the lawn?

Leave them. They break down on their own within a couple of weeks of rain and mowing, and the soil goes back into the lawn.

What's the difference between overseeding and a lawn renovation?

Overseeding adds seed to a lawn that's thin but still mostly grass. A renovation is for a lawn that's mostly weeds, bare soil or dead grass: the old growth is cleared, the soil is prepared, and the lawn is reseeded. We'll look at the lawn with you and recommend one or the other.

How much does aeration cost?

It depends on the size of the lawn and whether it's being overseeded or renovated, so we quote it after looking at the property. Send the address on the quote form and we'll set up a walkthrough.

Do you aerate commercial properties?

Yes. We aerate lawns at businesses as well as homes, and can pair it with weekly mowing and fertilization.
