Good to Know
Yard Work Rules in North Middleton Township.
Local rules that come up with lawn, leaf, snow and patio work, with the source for each. Dates change year to year, so check the source before you plan around one.
Leaf and brush pickup weeks
The township's hauler collects yard waste, leaves and Christmas trees during three fixed weeks a year, posted in the township newsletter: brush in late September, leaves in mid-November and early December. Leaves go in 30-gallon paper bags or cans marked yard waste, brush in tied bundles up to four feet and 40 pounds, out before 6 a.m. Monday of the pickup week. A fall cleanup hauls the leaves away instead.

Compost facility
North Middleton and Middlesex residents can take leaves and branches (up to six feet and 12 inches across) to the joint compost facility on Windy Lane from March through mid-October, and Saturdays into December, with photo ID. No contractors and no grass clippings, so what we cut leaves with us.

Snow
The township is direct about it: do not push snow out onto the roads at any time. Homeowners can be held responsible for accidents after snow is shoveled onto a township road, so plow or shovel to the right side of the driveway, and keep the mailbox clear. Set up snow removal before the first storm.

Permits for patios and walls
Building permits go through the township's third-party code agency, and zoning permits ($75 residential) come from the township for decks, sheds and other improvements not covered by a building permit; the township asks you to check with the Codes office first. Up to 1,000 square feet of new hard surface is exempt from a stormwater site plan (§ 175-11). Ask before a patio, walkway or wall starts.

Grass height
Vegetation over eight inches on a residential or improved lot is a nuisance under township code (§ 76-2). A weekly or biweekly mowing schedule keeps you well under it.

Open burning
The township bans open burning of waste and recyclables, and leaves aren't among the exceptions (Chapter 92), so leaves and brush have to be collected or hauled. Bigger piles are a brush removal job.
