Good to Know
Yard Work Rules in Swatara Township.
Local rules that come up with lawn, leaf, snow and patio work, with the source for each. Dates change year to year, so check the source before you plan around one.
Leaf collection
The township collects leaves from mid-October until the first significant snowfall, following the street-sweeping areas. Rake them loose to the curb or use brown paper bags by the night before, keep them out of the street and the storm grates, and leave out the sticks; leaves mixed with trash aren't picked up by anyone. A fall cleanup hauls them away instead.

Brush and the compost facility
Curbside brush pickup is twice a year, one week in April and one in September, for branches under 8 inches across cut to under 6 feet. The compost facility on Kelker Street is open April through October and sells permits to residents, non-residents and commercial users, for leaves, brush and branches; grass, sod, dirt and rocks aren't accepted. Bigger piles are a brush removal job.

Sidewalks after a snow
Township code gives owners 24 hours after snow stops to clear the sidewalk, and bans putting snow on any street or road, or on or next to a hydrant (§ 249-19). During a declared snow emergency, there's no parking on posted routes like Derry Street and Chambers Hill Road (Chapter 271). Set up snow removal before the first storm.

Patios and stormwater
Township zoning requires a permit to build or expand a structure, and grading on slopes of 15 percent or more needs one too. The stormwater rules start at 1,000 square feet of new hard surface, which needs a minor permit, and 3,000 square feet or more needs a major permit (§ 247-12). Ask the township before a patio, walkway or wall starts.

Grass height
The township's property maintenance code, updated in 2025, sets a six-inch limit on grass and weeds and names bamboo and poison ivy as noxious weeds. A weekly or biweekly mowing schedule keeps you under it.

Street trees and burning
Planting, trimming or removing a tree in the street right-of-way takes a township permit (§ 266-9), and burning yard waste in open pits or burn barrels is banned.
