Good to Know
Yard Work Rules in Susquehanna Township.
Local rules that come up with lawn, leaf, snow and patio work, with the source for each. Dates change year to year, so check the source before you plan around one.
Leaf collection
The township collects loose leaves from early October through mid-December. Put them at the curb line, not in the roadway, at least a day ahead, away from storm drains and with no branches or trash mixed in; pickup alternates between odd and even addresses by week. A fall cleanup hauls them away instead.

Brush and yard waste
Brush has to be tied in bundles no more than 60 inches long, 6 inches across and 30 pounds, and grass clippings, stumps and dirt aren't collected (Chapter 20). Township residents can drop yard waste at Dig My Earth on Fort Hunter Road, the township's compost partner. Bigger piles are a brush removal job.

Sidewalks after a snow
Township code gives owners 24 hours after snow stops to clear a sidewalk path at least 30 inches wide (§ 21-104). Snow goes on your own property, or along the curb if there's no room, but not into the street, and hydrants need a three-foot clear radius (§ 21-105). Set up snow removal before the first storm.

Patios and stormwater
Patios are on the township's zoning permit application, which asks for the existing and proposed impervious area. A stormwater permit starts at more than 1,000 square feet of new hard surface, counted since 2010, and larger excavation or fill needs a grading permit. Impervious coverage tops out at 40 percent in the R-1 and R-2 districts. Ask the township before a patio, walkway or wall starts.

Grass height
On lots of three acres or less, grass can't go over 12 inches, and it has to be cut to six inches or less at least twice a growing season (§ 10-102). A weekly or biweekly mowing schedule keeps you well under both.

Trees, clippings and burning
Branches have to clear 14 feet over the street and 8 feet over the sidewalk, and planting, removing or trimming a street tree needs a Shade Tree Commission permit (Chapter 25). The township asks that clippings and leaves stay out of gutters and storm drains, and it hasn't allowed open burning since 1988.
